At the 9-week mark—half way through the semester—students collaborated to produce a gallery show. The prompt? "Pick the best thing you did in the first half of the fall semester." First-year student Manako Tamura and second-year student came up with the idea for adding some math to the display; enjoy their short reflections below!

Manako Tamura: As we put together the gallery exhibition, we considered how best to communicate the work that had been done in the first 9 weeks. Because we could only put a few pieces on display, we tallied all the projects and assignments. The list we generated demonstrates the incredible quantity of work the department produced in just half a semester and acts as a snapshot of the curriculum at Products of Design. From political interventions to mechanical drawings, from business models to blog posts, this list acts as a speaks to the multi-disciplinary nature of the program.

"Oh this prototype could've been so much better."
"I didn't finish this reading."
"I forgot to get that process shot!"

These are things that constantly run through our brains while we grind away in the studio. There's no weekend, no Monday to start a week, and we're constantly in the studio, sketching, prototyping, presenting. It's a stream.

So when the department's student gallery committee assigned the task for me to compile a list of statistics of the work done in the first 9 weeks, it gave me an opportunity to stop, take a step back from the stream and see what we've accomplished. Going through all the syllabuses, counting the numbers of pages of assigned readings, sketches, and models, I realized how crazy the numbers were.  I would've never thought I could accomplish so much in just 9 weeks, and it made me proud of all the work that we had done.
