On August 2, the MFA Products of Design team led a design workshop for students from Figure Skating in Harlem—a wonderful local youth organization helping young women of color transform their lives by combining the art of figure skating with confidence building, leadership training and academic achievement. The students designed fun and intriguing speculative products using trash from their lunch break. Examples included repurposing a plastic soda bottle into a WiFi hotspot, creating a notebook with detachable tissue papers, and even turning pizza boxes into cardboard windmills to reduce waste and increase renewable energy usage! The girls also designed and presented apps to promote the above speculative products.
