Designed last year by second year @carlyjsimmons SPITMUS is a personal saliva testing system that uses litmus paper to help mental health inpatients detect cortisol levels during and after being provided hospital resourced wellness tools.
Designed by second year student @gustavdyrhauge the Sketch Book Lamp is an Arduino powered lamp that connects to a mobile apps and reminds designers to sketch who want to maintain a routine and improve their skills.
We’re thrilled @themuseumofmodernart has included PoD alum @joshcorn2 Multi-ccino Mug as one of the design object pairings in the Good Design Lab adjacent to The Value of Good Design exhibition now on view at MoMA. Josh Corn designed the mug as part of PoD’s annual student collaboration with @momadesignstore. Link in bio for more about the exhibit!
JOIN is a mail-order supply and learning kit for Type 1 Diabetics designed last year by students @antya_antje @anhngp @weirunshi and @tzuchinglin0103 . The kit provides all of the T1 diabetes supplies and medication, joined together in one comprehensive and comforting format.
An amazing part of PoD is how collaborative the students are in helping and editing each other’s work, portfolios and resumes. Today the students rehearsed for their upcoming “Design Match,” PoD’s job fair, where students get to meet with incredible design studios around the city.
It’s almost Valentine’s Day and we have the perfect gift for your Galentine. To celebrate the anniversary of @we_racket Valentine’s Day videos, RACKET is rattling off a bouquet custom designed and crafted by our very own PoD students! It’s $5 to enter and proceeds go to local menstruators in need. Winner will be chosen EOD 2/14.
To enter click on link in our bio to RACKET’s website and follow the directions at the bottom!
Designed by first year student @mean_yufei Soundnest allows a user to create sound recordings to send to friends, family and other acquaintances. When a new message is waiting, the product lights up and with a simple hand gesture, users can listen to the messages that await them. It allows for better connections and communication and can be used to make memorable messages, as an educational tool, or even as a game.
What if Alexa didn’t sound like a white woman? Designed by second year student @eviecheung Rookee is an app paired with a Bluetooth “googly-eye” attachment for devices like the Amazon Echo. The parent-facing app shows how children respond and speak to these AI devices and the eyes react in real time to the things that are said to it. Rookee aims to humanize the digital assistant and change the behavior of those speaking to the devices. In an effort for inclusivity, it allows the user to control the voice of Alexa—
specifically, the language, dialect, accent, and gender.
We are delighted to announce our Visiting Lecture Series lineup for the Spring 2019 season. Read more about Ingrid Fetell, Emily Cohen, Nina Montgomery, Ti Chang, and Sam Potts in the link in our bio!
Moxie was designed by second year students @hrudin.goes.outside @rheabhandaridesign @carlyjsimmons @sophcarrillo for Product, Brand and Experience. It is the first roller derby garment that integrates shoulder protection and makes you “game-day ready.” It came from an insight during their research that shoulder injuries are especially unique to roller derby because, by regulation, “derbiers” are not permitted hard padding outside elbow and knee gear.
Every year before classes begin in September, first years participate in an orientation futuring workshop, where they break into groups and participate in a prototyping sprint with whatever objects can be found on a table. Here, three first years from the class of 2020 started to collect items to build their prototype.

JUSTICE BY ALL: Revitalizing Civic Engagement in the Judicial System
JUSTICE BY ALL: Revitalizing Civic Engagement in the Judicial System

Julia Lindpaintner’s thesis work was inspired by her own experience of serving on a grand jury in Manhattan during the summer of 2016. It profoundly changed her understanding of the judicial system, and in particular, the way she saw her role in it. “My mental model shifted,” Julia states. She further explains, “Instead of seeing the judicial system as an autonomous force over which I had no influence, I felt viscerally the way in which we, as citizens, are collectively responsible for the system and the outcomes it produces.”

Designing For Women Vets: #SheServed Campaign Changes Cultural Norms

As part of SVA Products of Design’s partnership with Veterans Affairs (and held through the Design Research and Integration class taught by IDEO’s Lawrence Abrahamson) , designers Jiani Lin, Alexia Cohen, Teng Yu, William Crum, and Antriksh Nangia used design to examine gender and the military—creating two design proposals aimed at changing the way people “see” women veterans.
