"You Better NOT Forget My Birthday" Arduino Cupcake

Do you know someone who moved far away and keeps forgetting all of their friends' birthdays? Charvi Shrimali was struck by her own forgetfulness after moving from India to New York City and missing a few too many birthdays because of the time zone difference. Deciding to never make the same mistake again, Charvi built You Better NOT Forget My Birthday, a smart device in the form of a plush celebratory cupcake.

Birthday calls are a meaningful tradition for many people, and for Charvi and her friends in India, calling each other precisely at midnight on their special day was particularly important.

Birthday calls are a meaningful tradition for many people, and for Charvi and her friends in India, calling each other precisely at midnight on their special day was particularly important. "Due to the 10.5-hour time difference, I have been calling my friends either too early or too late to wish them Happy Birthday," Charvi explains with chagrin.

She offers up this simple birthday reminder as a “gag gift” to give your forgetful friend; you can make your own device by following the steps on Charvi's Instructables.com project page.

Charvi says that the most significant success of the project was understanding how IFTTT works. "Building this simple birthday reminder helped me break down the functioning principles of smart devices into bite-sized information," she shares. "Understanding that the action and response have the crucial command feed in the middle has demystified the world of smart devices."
