On April 1st, the MFA Products of Design celebrated it's 5th anniversary, welcoming back graduates from all years since the inception of the program. Designed and produced by the cmmttee—Eden Lew, Natsuki Hayashi, and Marianna Mezhibovskaya—the event featured refreshments from Radiant Pig and the The City Bakery. A couple months back we told you about alum Jon Lung competing on the new MythBusters? Well, Jon made it to the Final Four contestants, and on Saturday night during the "live reveal", Jon won one of the two new MythBuster host spots! Congrats Jon!
We invite you to attend the Masters Thesis showcase presentations of the 2017 graduating class of the MFA in Products of Design program on Friday, May 5th at the SVA Theatre from 1-5pm. 15 graduating masters students will each present their year-long thesis work, comprised of research, artifacts, services, experiences, and platforms.
On Friday, February 24th, the MFA Products of Design department held its fourth annual Design:Match Job Fair event, where global and local firms and organizations met with students, shared work, and discussed employment, funding, and entrepreneurship. It's probably the biggest cliché—and the biggest truth—that a long-distant parent wants to know if their kid has eaten, if she's home or at work, and basically know that they're okay. First-year student Smruti Adya's cleaver Arduino-based invention—the Eez Clock—solves the problem by notifying the concerned parent about the general whereabouts of their distant child and whether that child has eaten all the meals for the day.
On January 18th, Jeff Kapec, co-founder of Tanaka Kapec Design Group, came to Products of Design to give a hands-on lecture about his long career specializing in medical device design. Enjoy the video and snapshots below!
As part of SVA Products of Design’s partnership with Veterans Affairs (and held through the Design Research and Integration class taught by IDEO’s Lawrence Abrahamson), designers Smruti Adya, Bernice Wong, Lassor Feasley, Juho Lee, Christopher Rand, and Kuan Xu designed a number of solutions to improve women veterans’ experience in three different areas specific to visiting the VA Hospital: Transportation to the hospital; Wayfinding once in the building; and Pre-appointment communications.
Huge congratulations to Panisa Khunprasert, who's just-released Geo Stacking Coasters are now featured on the cover of the 2017 MoMA Wholesale Catalog! From the catalog: "These sets of colorful silicone stacking coasters feature varying geometric faceted edges that create visual and tactile appeal. Designed for MoMA’s collaboration with the MFA Products of Design program at the School of Visual Arts, they are playful, decorative and functional.
Building on the findings of over 20 first-person interviews with VA staff and discharged veterans, the group surfaced three principal insights: The first is that there is an opportunity to facilitate better communication between veterans—veteran-to-veteran. The team learned that information around the transition to civilian life, and around the available veteran services “is perceived better when it comes straight from a veteran,” the team argued. “Veteran-to-veteran creates a much stronger bond, and the ‘young veteran’ is more likely to pay attention and communicate interest when the information comes directly from the source.”
Talking with Strangers, designed by first year students Andrew Schlesinger and Louis Elwood Leach, is a toolkit to equip coffeeshops with simple, customizable design interventions as a way to encourage conversation amongst their patrons. "We wanted to revive the environment of the coffee house from the Age of Enlightenment," offer the designers. "We are really hopeful that this toolkit will not only encourage a dialogue for proprietors to turn their 'coffee shop' back into a 'coffee house,' but will give them to tools necessary to do it with minimal effort."
